Vulnerable gzip patched (FreeBSD-SA-06:21.gzip)

We've patched gzip (and related programs) on the server, following an advisory that says compressed files can be a security hasard.

Server IP listed in spamblock sites

The server thinkering has as a result of poorly implemented server-side mailing utilities been used to send out spam messages to unsuspecting recipients.

Because of this the server has been listed in various blacklists, so mail sent out from thinkering might be rejected by other mail systems if they make use of these registries to block spammers.

We've helped plug the hole that was used to send email, and are now working on getting the server IP removed from these spam registries.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Memory upgraded

The memory was upgraded today, so users would've experienced outages of 1-8 minutes on their sites. This will improve the speed of all accounts hosted on the server. Enjoy :)

Apache restarted

Apache was hanging on the server for a short period today, and had to be manually restarted. Thanks to the improved monitoring system we were able to catch this immediately, but we apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. :)

Kernel patched

The kernel has been patched to protect against the vulnerabilities mentioned in FreeBSD-SA-05:08.kmem, FreeBSD-SA-05:07.ldt and FreeBSD-SA-05:06.iir.

Kernel patched

We've patched the kernel to protect against the latest FreeBSD advisory, "FreeBSD Security Advisory FreeBSD-SA-05:04.ifconf"

"""The SIOCGIFCONF ioctl allows a user process to ask the kernel to produce a list of the existing network interfaces and copy it into a buffer provided by the user process.

II. Problem Description

In generating the list of network interfaces, the kernel writes into a portion of a buffer without first zeroing it. As a result, the prior contents of the buffer will be disclosed to the calling process."""

Kernel patched

We've patched and installed a new kernel, to protect against the sendfile call exploit mentioned in "FreeBSD Security Advisory FreeBSD-SA-05:02.sendfile".

"... The sendfile(2) system call allows a server application (such as an HTTP or FTP server) to transmit the contents of a file over a network connection without first copying it to application memory. High performance servers such as Apache and ftpd use sendfile."

Python 2.4 installed

We've installed Python 2.4 on thinkering.nidelven-it.no, and some of you might have noticed access-problems on your Zope instances.

This was because the new python version overwrote the default python interpreter (2.3), and Zope instances that were restarted after that installation were running with the wrong Python version.

This has been fixed now, and we've made a note of it for future upgrades.
