Some security patching to come

There is a security patch coming up for Zope/Plone tomorrow.

We would recommend to all customers that have a Zope/Plone instance to upgrade/migrate to one of the server packages instead, to avoid the risk of server-wide exploits. Get in touch if you want to improve the security of your site(s), for a relatively small cost.

More information will come later today.

[Later..]  There will be downtime related to this fix, so if your site is not responding, don't panic, it should become available as soon as the necessary work has been done to secure the services.

Plone vulnerability info

On the 6th of November a patch will be released to the community for a number of vulnerabilities in Plone.

Due to the severity of the vulnerabilities, we recommend anyone maintaining their own Plone site to *shut it down completely* before the patch is released and keep it down until the patch has been installed and verified to work.

There will be downtime in this period for customers who have deals for security updates.

More info about the vulnerabilities is available here:

Zope/Plone Security vulnerability: Privilege escalation

A highly serious vulnerability in Zope that allows unauthorised access has been discovered. All recent versions of Zope are affected. All supported versions of Plone are affected.

Pre announcement: http://plone.org/products/plone/security/advisories/pre-anno...

Due to the serious nature of this issue, we will take down all sites Tuesday 16:30 CEST (half hour before announcement), and we estimate up to 3 hours downtime for patching. We will re-enable sites continuously as we progress with the patching.

Multiple vulnerabilities discovered in Zope/Plone

There has been multiple vulnerabilities discovered in Zope/Plone. The link to the relevant page on plone.org is here:

http://plone.org/products/plone-hotfix/releases/20110531

We encourage *all* our customers who use Plone to install this fix. We will in the week to come install this fix for all our Paid support, Company Online and Managed Server customers, but we recommend all customers to install this patch now, if they are able to.

[2011-06-11] Looks like patching will take longer than a week, we'll be patching instances as we go along. We believe the exploits are not that severe for the remainder of our customers (a specific segment with specific characteristics).

DoS discovered in Zope PAS

A Denial-of-Service has been discovered in Zope's PAS module:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/zope-pas/+bug/789858

Where a logged-in user can change their username to someone else's and by doing so, deny the user with the other username authenticated access.

We don't see this bug being serious enough to warrant a patch as it isn't a privilege escalation, and we also believe it would affect a small share of our hosting customers.

New hosting partner Copyleft, Nidelven IT LTD focuses on consulting

Hi. The last couple of months we've been working to sell and subsequently hand over the hosting business we have to Copyleft.

After some years of hosting, we found that we could not provide a good hosting service without it taxing our employees too much, and we want to go back to selling one product: our (consulting) time.

Copyleft have been taking care of a lot of our hosting tasks the last couple of years and we're happy with the level of service they have provided. As a part of taking over our hosting business, they also take over 2 employees so there will be continuity to the service you have received and will receive in the future.

Copyleft will also announce some improvements to the hosting part in the time to come, and they will give you information about that in the time to come.

The infrastructure for hosting and the commitment we have to our customers will be the same as before.

So, after 9 years of hosting we're done, and we know this will lead to a better service to our customers, be more fun for us, and also better for our partners. Thanks for hosting with us, and do choose Copyleft as they will be combining their experience with hosting with ours.

Copyleft is a 40-man strong company residing primarily in Norway and Mexico, and they have a strong focus on FOSS: http://www.copyleft.no/

Notice on server security May 2010

Last year we had a migration of customers from saw2.nidelven-it.no, due to finding a rootkit on the server and performance issues.

We believed we posted a notice on our weblog about this issue, but looking through the archives it seems we did not post a notice. A mention of security issues was done to customers who had to participate in the migration process from saw2.

We will also send out this notice on email to those who were saw2 customers so that the customers may do a check on their own sites if they see it necessary.

We apologize for not giving a full notice earlier.

[Update] We have not gotten any reports from customers who were on saw2 that their security has been breached. So our assumption that this rootkit installation was a simple botnet/spamnet setup seems to be correct.

Update on mitigation procedure

It has been decided that we will disable logins for all our customers, including Zope-only customers.

We're doing this because it is the best way we can handle the problem, and it is a quick fix to switch the sites back to handling logins again.

But we strongly recommend you take the appropriate measures such as installing a hotfix for Plone before enabling logins again.

Plone vulnerability (privilege escalation)

We have become aware of a problem related to Plone and its security system, which is posted here:

http://plone.org/products/plone/security/advisories/cve-2011...

We are considering options and working towards a safe solutions for all our customers, primarily those who have paid support or other security update agreements, and then those who do not.

We think disabling logins is the right way to go about it, but we will discuss this internally, make some decisions and then see what we will do about the problem.

Issues with begna

Due to issues with Begna, we're migrating customers off it to make sure websites respond as they should.

There has been some problems with Begna, but we didn't hear any customer complaints; when we inspected things more closely, we found that the server was at times responding a lot slower than it should.

Therefore we have done some work now, and will finish up within a day or two the process of migrating customers from Begna.

I feel this is a bit below our standard, but we will learn from this and implement better tests and monitoring for the future.

[Later..]

We've migrated some accounts to a fresh server, but are experiencing some setbacks which are being dealed with. If your site is down, please send us a friendly reminder on the support@nidelven-it.no address.

[Even later..]

OK, looks like things are under control. We have a handful of customers to migrate, then things should be working "on par" for all customers.

Moving shared.nidelven-it.no to new server

Due to a site having poor protection against spamming, we're moving shared.nidelven-it.no to a new server and packing the database - as well as taking steps to disable the spammable site and notifying the customer.

We expect this process to be done sometime today.

Another update on connectivity issues

So Saturday we had some serious problems with all the servers' connectivity. We have reviewed our monitoring logs, and now it looks like the problems started around 03:25, about 90 minutes before what we originally thought.

So it looks like there has been multipe failures in procedures and systems that made this outage last about 12 hours, all of which are fixable - and it is unlikely that such an outage will happen again, at least in the same way and on this magnitude.

We should get reports later today on what exactly happened.

[Later..]

We've gotten a report, and the gist of it is that a point in the network failed, and the backup-systems for this point (quite elaborate) also failed.

The people responsible for this point will be relieved of duty, many procedures will be reviewed and updated, a more robust network system will be deployed and emergency-watch and preparations will be doubled.

[Permalink] [By morphex] [Hosting (Atom feed)] [13 Dec 08:28 GMT+2]

Update on connectivity issues

Here's an update on the connectivity issues. Everything is running fine now, and have been since a fix was made for the issue.

We're still waiting on a report from the responsible people on this issue, and there will be a proper explanation of what happened.

We've operated as a company for 8 years now, and have not experienced something like this before. Companies many, many times bigger than us have had problems like this, and it is something that can happen.

We offer good value hosting packages, so it is not a cost/quality issue, simply that things can go very wrong for anyone, including us.

We'll keep you posted.

Connectivity issues (firewall/routing)

Hi.

Since around 5 this morning (it is now 15:23) there has been a complete stop in the availability of sites on our servers.

It looks like everyone is available again now, after a lot of people have worked on the issue.

This is something we take very seriously, and we will update you on this issue as we gain an understanding of what happened.

[Later..]

In the hours after this was mostly fixed, there has been some intermittent prbolems with dropped connections.

As of 16:25 - everything seems fine.

Server issues for thewall yesterday

Yesterday we had problems with thewall, due to a runaway (CPU etc.) site. This is a customer that has had many issues before on dedicated servers, so we're trying to figure out if this is a customer that is likely to be a target of malicious attacks, and whether they should have informed us about their status as a customer prone to attacks.

We apologize for slow responsiveness on thewall yesterday.

Maintenance on infernal-love

This is just a quick note to tell you that we will have to schedule
maintenance on the server infernal-love due to the problems we've been
experiencing with iowait due to high activity on the disks.

We're going to move the server to faster disks to improve the
performance. To do this we will have to shutdown thes server while we
are transferring it to the new disks. The server may experience up to 6
hours of downtime during maintenance due to the large amount of files
that have to be moved.

This should be done as soon as possible due to the poor performance on
the servers. So we're scheduling maintenance on Thursday 20 May from
20:00 CET to 02:00 CET. infernal-love will be taken down 20:00 CET, and
will be offline until the migration is complete.

Migration of servers at Nidelven IT Ltd

Dear Customer,

Due to the recent migration of all servers at Nidelven IT Ltd there has
been a change in the IP addresses of the servers which host your site.

Domains which are managed by Nidelven IT Ltd have been automatically
changed to point to the new IP addresses. Nidelven IT Ltd hereby
requests you to change the IP addresses of your domains which are not
being managed by our DNS servers.

The DNS can be looked up at http://www.dnswatch.info/. On the page,
please enter the domain name in the filed labelled "Hostname or IP",
select the "Type" to be "A" and click "Resolve". If the check returns
the following nameservers in the "Answer" section:

     dns1.nettica.com
     dns2.nettica.com
     dns3.nettica.com
     dns4.nettica.com
     dns5.nettica.com

please contact the managers of the domain and have the nameservers set
to the following:

     dns10.copyleft.no
     dns11.copyleft.no
     dns12.copyleft.no

If you are using anything other than Nettica or Copyleft nameservers,
please update the IP entries in your DNS configuration to reflect the
new IP address. The map of the new IP address are put up at the Nidelven
IT Ltd's hosting weblog which can be found at
http://www.nidelven-it.no/weblogs/hosting. Inconvenience caused is
deeply regretted and we request you to take this small step as a process
of participating in our improved hosting services.

This would also serve as a gentle reminder that it is of a definite
advantage to have the domains and DNS managed by Nidelven IT Ltd, as,
for such domains, the changes are automatic. Domains are charged at a
fair rate while the DNS management is free of charge. Nidelven IT Ltd
thanks you for your cooperation.

Server migration

We are in the process of migration our servers to another location.
Downtime per server is estimated to be 1 hour. This work will start tomorrow (Thursday March 25th 2010) and will stretch over 1-2 weeks.

Mailserver down due to maintenance

The mailserver will be down for 4-6 hours on Tuesday 2010-03-09 due to maintenance. It's expected to have it up and running around 6PM local time.

We believe no incoming email should be lost, just delayed. Unless some poorly configured sending servers have a low threshold for mail failures, in which case the sending party should receive a bounce message.

We apologize for the late notification of this planned event.

New spam filtering system in testing

We're currently testing a new spam filtering system which we believe will improve the spam situation for our customers. Pricing and details will be given at a later date.

We're going to test this thoroughly first, so please bear with us as we make sure it works well before offering it to you.

If you're interested in testing the system before we put it into production, give us a notice and we'll hook you up.

Planned upgrade to mail system

Within the next 6 months the mail system should be upgraded; this upgrade will bring some improvements among other things to the spam filtering system.

We understand that spam is an annoying issue for our customers, and we are willing and able to setup extra spam filtering solutions for a fee. The fee depends on the amount of accounts a given domain has.

So, if you're in a hurry to get spam filtering improved, contact us. If not, we should get a better solution in not too long.

Nidelven IT - Important note about security

Hi,

this is an important message regarding security for our shared server customers (Standard, Plus and Webmaster). If you have a Standard account with only a Zope and/or Plone website where we did the configuration, you can disregard this message.

This message is posted on our hosting weblog

  http://www.nidelven-it.no/weblogs/hosting

and sent out to the registered email addresses on each account. If you receive this message on several different addresses we apologize. If you are not a technical person, please consult with a technical person before responding to this message. As of now, we haven taken many steps to ensure that your data is relatively safe. As mentioned below, an audit where we consult is an option.

We've noticed that some of our customers put what could be sensitive files in their home directories. Files that lie directly in the home directory could by default be readable by others.

For example, after logging in via SSH, and running 'ls -ld .' the following will be seen:

morphex@infernal-love:~$ ls -ld .
drwxr-xr-x 11 morphex morphex 4096 2008-11-14 05:32 .

What is displayed here is a directory (in this case, the home directory of the user morphex). The line drwxr-xr-x means that what is listed is a directory (the d at the start), with the permissions read-write-execute for the owner (rwx), read-execute for the group (r-x) and read-execute for others (r-x).

What this means, is that other users on the same server can list the contents of your home directory. This is the way it has to be, as for example Apache needs read access to the apache directory located in the home directory.

Now, looking further at the contents in the home directory, you could see something like this:

morphex@infernal-love:~$ ls -l
total 44
Permissions User Group Size Date and time Name
drwxr-x--- 4 morphex daemon 4096 2007-01-17 02:44 apache
-rw-r----- 1 morphex morphex 3425 2008-03-06 19:16 apache.conf
drwxr-x--- 2 morphex morphex 4096 2008-03-06 19:13 bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 morphex morphex 16152 2007-08-06 10:54 index.html
drwxr-x--- 2 morphex morphex 4096 2008-03-06 19:16 logs
drwxr-x--- 9 morphex morphex 4096 2007-08-06 10:38 squid
drwxr-x--- 2 morphex morphex 4096 2008-02-11 01:17 tmp
drwxr-x--- 7 morphex morphex 4096 2007-01-17 02:41 zope

This is a example of good security settings; the apache directory is only readable and executable by the owner and the group. The daemon group is what the Apache process runs under, and Apache needs (at least) read and execute access to the apache directory and subdirectories to properly display websites.

Now, take for example the index.html entry. This is a typical example of files that could be readable by others, as it has the "read bit" set for owner, group and others (others being all users). If the index.html file contained sensitive information such as usernames and passwords, it would be possible for any user on the same server to read that information.

To protect a file or directory, use the command 'chmod o-rwx' on a file or directory, such as this:

morphex@infernal-love:~$ ls -l index.html
-rw-r--r-- 1 morphex morphex 16152 2007-08-06 10:54 index.html
morphex@infernal-love:~$ chmod o-rwx index.html
morphex@infernal-love:~$ ls -l index.html
-rw-r----- 1 morphex morphex 16152 2007-08-06 10:54 index.html
morphex@infernal-love:~$

Along the same lines, if you have a directory with sensitive information, it should be protected with the 'chmod o-rwx directory-name' command.

If you noticed that you have some files that could've been compromised (containing usernames and passwords for example) - we recommend setting new usernames and passwords for those logins.

Some of you might be worried that other users have read your data. That's a legitimate concern, but users on these servers are paying customers, for that reason we consider the chance of someone maliciously using this information to be low.

If you have any questions, please refrain from calling - use email instead. It is usually a lot easier to answer questions and give help over email - especially when it comes to technical matters.

Please see this page for more information about file-system permission settings:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_system_permissions

We've gone through all the shared servers and changed the permissions (chmod o-rwx) for all files and directories starting with zope (zope*) and the name tmp in users' home directories. We did not chmod permissions for all files, as this could have unpredictable results for users who have a non-standard structure in their home directories. We have a list of the customers where the Zope permissions were wrong, and will get in touch with the affected customers so that (at least) passwords can be reset.

We've also gone over all the servers and changed the permissions for the ~/apache directory (chmod o-rwx) and changed the group to daemon. We urge everyone who makes use of usernames and passwords in the ~/apache directory to change any passwords used in these files.

PS: We consider the shared hosting packages to be relatively secure, but as this example shows, it might be better to run a server instead.

The Managed Server solutions we offer are a good choice if you need the extra security.

PPS: We will audit logs after this notice has been sent out, to see if any users try to access other users' information.

PPPS: If you want us to do a basic audit on your permission settings, we can do so - consulting half an hour in the process (costing roughly 350 NOK / 50 USD / 40 EUR):

Plone hotfix 2008-0164

Is it possible to perform CSRF attacks on Plone sites with version less than 3.1. We recommend installing the Hotfix if you have a Plone 3.0 site. Plone 3.1 sites and newer are not affected by this exploit.

Sites older than Plone 3 (2.5, 2.0, 1.0 and so on) won't be able to make use of the hotfix; for those we recommend following the temporary workarounds listed on the Hotfix announcement:

http://plone.org/products/plone-hotfix/releases/CVE-2008-016...

We'll be installing the Hotfix for paid support customers where applicable (Plone 3.0 sites).

We are working on a solution for older Plone sites as well, which should give fairly good protection against these kinds of attacks.

Paid support customers with old Plone sites will get this fix we develop installed for free, and other customers will be able to get the fix installed for their site for 1 consulting hour.

Problems with duplicate messages, slow response times

Due to some disk upgrades on the mail servers, some users have been reporting slow access as well as duplicate messages.

The speed should be better now, and work is being done to figure out the duplicate messages; it is believed that duplicate messages is related to the message indexes and that this could be fixed in the coming days.

We apologize for this, and are working with the mail provider to resolve the matter.

Network problems for some visitors on European servers

Wednesday we (and some of our users) experienced problems with the connectivity towards the servers we have in Europe. This is believed to be because Teleglobe which provides some of the connectivity had issues.

Teleglobe has been disabled for now, and work is being done to figure out what went wrong and so on.

We'll update this post later when we get more information.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

Regarding problems with mail today

For about 5 hours today the mail system was slow and perhaps unresponsive, as an email handler connected to the system was looping and duplicating messages - tying up all resources on the mail system.

Regarding monthly payments

From 01. February 2007 we will no longer accept monthly payments for
hosting services. Instead we will introduce the quarterly payment, where
you will get an invoice every 3rd month. The quartely payment is only
available to customers with a minimum buy worth of 300 USD per year. If
you buy services from us worth under 300 USD per year, i.e. the Standard
hosting package or the Plus hosting package, you will have to pay
annually. See about refunds below.

Please note that this change will be valid from your next invoice. If
you have an unpaid invoice, just pay it as usual.

Your account will automatically be transfered into either the quarterly
or the yearly payment schedule, based on the conditions mentioned above.
If you have other requests, please contact us.

The annual fee is overall a much more cheaper alternative for you than
paying monthly/quarterly. If you pay the annual fee, you will get a two
month discount compared to the monthly/quarterly fee.

About refunds:

Any prepaid hosting services will be refunded on a monthly basis,
meaning that if you pay for 1 year and cancel after 5 1/2 months, you
will get a refund for 6 months.
Payments for domain services and SSL certificates will not be refunded,
as we also pay for these on a yearly basis.

Important message regarding email / Viktig melding angående epost

Hi. This message will be presented in English first, then in Norwegian.
Hei. Denne meldingen kommer på engelsk først, deretter på norsk.

Due to the fact that old Spam messages and deleted messages are
taking up a lot of space on the mail system, automatic purging of
mail messages will start on the 11th of December. This means
that messages located in the Junk or Trash folder older than 30
days will be removed automatically. So if your email domain
or account is configured to send Spam messages to the Junk
folder, or you use IMAP and delete messages (moving them
to the Trash folder), you should check those folders more
frequently than every 30 days to make sure that important
messages aren't removed. On the 11th of December messages
older than 30 days will be removed, so you should check
the Trash and Junk folders before this date and then regularly
check the folders after this date.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, please ask
the technical person handling your website and/or email,
then ask us. This way we are able to handle questions
efficiently.

We would also like to mention that we've added more
documentation regarding setting up email, mailing lists and
spam filtering. Please see

 http://support.nidelven-it.no/

for more information.

Thank you. :)

Best regards,

Nidelven IT Support by Morten W. Petersen

enn 30 dager vil bli slettet automatisk.

 http://support.nidelven-it.no/

for mer informasjon.

Takk. :)

Mvh,

Automatic purging of Trash and Junk

A new system for minimizing disk space use is being implemented on the mail system, and a change from this system is that mail in Junk or Mail folders older than 30 days will be automatically deleted.

So if you use IMAP (and the Trash folder) or SPAM filtering which moves spam messages to the Junk folder, be sure to check and move messages more frequently than every 30 days.

Important information for customers hosted on our European servers

Hi,

the next Saturday this month (17/06/2006) our colocation provider will
perform an upgrade on their hosting facilities and move all their
servers to a new, improved facility. The reasons they're doing this is
improved reliability, better internet connectivity and higher fire- and
thunderstorm-safety. This new facility will be certified by ISO 9000:2000.

They'll be starting this move at 18:00 CET and since they'll be moving a
fair amount of servers (among some of which are ours) the process will
take some hours.

We will be monitoring the availability of our servers and make sure
they're coming up as they should - beyond that we can't do much.

I hope this isn't a big inconvenience for you and that you see the value
in having this upgrade done. I don't expect this to happen again in the
forseeable future.

If you are the website contact on behalf of your client, I would
recommend you notify them of this planned event - it is always better if
the customer knows what's going on.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. :-)

Some more information about the problems

We experienced some serious problems with SAW server today, so we moved all customers to a new, faster server. The whole move took about 6 hours.

All-in-all we handled the situation well, and were able to make good use of the downtime as we had fresh backups that could be used to setup the accounts on the new server.

Outages like this can happen when a site is running on only one server, without redundancy.. we believe the new server will provide a stable platforms for years to come though, and we're always improving our procedures to handle events like this.

So thank you very much for your patience.. you're the reason we're here. :)

Server IP listed in spamblock sites

The server thinkering has as a result of poorly implemented server-side mailing utilities been used to send out spam messages to unsuspecting recipients.

We're upgrading our shared Zope from Plone 2.0.5 to Plone 2.1 on the 31st of October, at 15:00 CET.

From experience, we know that products will break after migration from 2.0.5 to 2.1 so for some of you, it would be a good idea to upgrade from Standard to Plus, so you can upgrade Plone when it suits you.

We'll do our best to make the transition go smoothly and will be spending the entire evening (and possibly night) making sure Plone sites are running as smoothly as possible, but we can't make any guarantees, so again, upgrading to Plus is a good idea, if it is critical that your site runs well at all times.

More info on change of IPs

Tuesday evening we will be switching IPs on Zooropa - this means that those of you who manage DNS yourselves will have to update DNS to point to the new IP.

Change the IPs from --> to:

  213.189.19.173 --> 213.189.23.173
  213.189.19.178 --> 213.189.23.178
  213.189.19.179 --> 213.189.23.179

those of you who have DNS managed by us don't have to change anything. If you'd like, we can start managing DNS for all your domains, but the DNS switch to us should be done by Monday to make sure everything goes OK. Those of you who manage DNS yourselves will have to make sure that it is updated before Wednesday.

The switch to new IPs will happen at 14:00 CEST, and we expect the entire operation to take about 5 minutes.

Change of IPs

Due to reorganization at the server hosting provider, we have to change our IPs in the 213.189.19.* range. This means that IPs like 213.189.19.173 will from Wednesday be 213.189.23.173, 213.189.19.179 will be 213.189.23.179, and so on.

We apologize for the inconvenience this brings, and will be doing our best to insure that this doesn't cause any extra issues for our customers.

DNS infrastructure upgraded

We've made some changes in the name server structure to make it more robust. This should improve the service for our customers hosted in Europe. It will also prevent mail servers dropping mail to any domains hosted by us if our server provider in the US has any issues (like they recently had with a DoS attack).

We're looking into and working on further improvements for our hosting customers.

Refused MySQL connections

MySQL today refused connections from several IPs; we're not sure what happened, but will be building monitoring tools for MySQL to make sure that we're able to track the crash and the cause the next time.

It looks like the MySQL database used a lot of memory as well, so some of the sites may have been responding slowly while MySQL was refusing connections.
